Atlanta has some of the best soul food in the nation and here are a few places:

  • A mainstay is Paschal’s Restaurant, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders met to plan marches. Paschal’s was founded by brothers James and Robert Paschal, who provided free fried chicken to students arrested for protesting. Originally in the West End district, Paschal’s is now located in historic Castleberry Hill; (404.525.2023)

  • Soul food cook Thelma Grundy serves sweet potato pie and candied yams at Thelma’s Kitchen, now on Auburn Avenue; (404. 688.5855).

  • At Louise’s Soul Food on Ponce de Leon Avenue, Louise Holmes and her daughters, cook
    down-home soul food, but patrons also can opt for heart-healthy, low-fat options; (404.817.9513)

  • Find Beautiful Restaurant, an institution in the Cascade area, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner; (404.752.5931).

  • Son’s Place Restaurant, an Inman Park family restaurant that dishes out meatloaf, collard greens and banana pudding; (404.581.0530)

  • Fast-food chain Yasin’s HomeStyle Seafood, which serves catfish, chicken wings and lemon meringue pie at five sites; 3541 MLK Jr. Drive, 1 mile outside I-285, (404.696.1541)

  • Busy Bee Café downtown, on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which dates back to 1947 and offers fried chicken and red velvet cake; (404.525.9212).

Other places to find not only soul food and down-home Southern cooking but fine cuisine as well include:

  • The Pecan, a gem of a restaurant in College Park that serves everything from New York strip steak to fried lobster tail.

  • Chanterelle’s Café & Catering, a Caribbean-style eatery on Evans Street; (404.758.0909)

  • West of downtown, Showcase Eatery (404.669.0504) is known for its New Orleans shrimp and champagne chicken, while Hairston’s Dinner Club in Stone Mountain features Cajun and Creole delicacies and live jazz and comedy shows; (770.322.9988).

Eateries operated by celebrities also are on the rise.

  • For upscale soul and Caribbean food and perhaps a cognac, sample Justin’s Restaurant & Bar in Buckhead, owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs and L.A. Reid.

  • Gladys Knight and Ron Winan’s Chicken & Waffles on Peachtree Street continues a tradition dating back to Wells Restaurant in Harlem in the 1930s, when late-night celebrity diners couldn’t decide between breakfast and dinner; 404.874.9393.

  • Jermaine Dupri owns Cafe Dupri in Buckhead, serving healthy American and Southern cooking until well after midnight; (404.846.2773).

  • Meanwhile, the wine lifestyle has inspired Usher Raymond, who is a partner in The Grape at Inman Park.
